Ableton Live - music tool of the gods

The music tool of the gods

I have delusions of musical greatness. In my head I picture myself as a Rick Wakeman for the naughties, a sleek kaftan-clad figure standing behind my banks of synths tinkling fake ivories to The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

The actual reality is me sat on the floor of my spare bedroom stabbing at a cheap keyboard with one finger until I get the note I require – repeating until the tune is finished or the world ends, whichever comes first.

I don’t even own a kaftan.

Actually I can knock out a good tune if required, it just takes me a bit of time and a lot of motivation. Luckily I had both in abundance when I was asked to produce some music for a Lyneham Stage Club pantomime back in 2006. It must’ve been of a reasonable quality as I have since been asked many times to provide pieces music for various shows. You can now download these tunes, plus other non-theatre tunes, using the links below.

Aladdin

The Lyneham Stage Club 2009  pantomime had an oriental theme. These two tunes were used as backing tracks to vocal numbers.

Brenton Vs. Brenton

What is the dark secret which enflames the Brenton family feud? Who is the mysterious Eddie? Why are Lana’s shoulderpads wider than the door? And just what was Deke Brenton doing down on the farm? All this, and more, is revealed in this outrageous spoof of American soaps and blockbuster mini-series, set in the manic world of Chicago’s biggest ad agency.

For this 2008 Lyneham Stage Club production, music in the style of the 80′s American soaps was required. These tunes are re-workings of the music used in the opening title sequence to an episode of The Young Ones.

Project Joe

A sneak preview of what was to be a musical collaboration between myself and Joe Young, ex-vocalist and guitarist from the Oxfordshire band Tall Order. This was intended to be  an ongoing project between myself and Joe; our plan was to run duplicate Cubase setups on our respective computers so we could create our own tracks, despite us being separated by an hour’s drive. We could then choose the best parts, create our own mixes and email them to each other to make complete songs.

For this track, guitar parts were provided by Joe Young, synth parts were sampled into Steinberg’s Cubase from Propellerhead’s Reason with bass, drum and pad synth parts taken from Cubase’s bundled plugins.
